As UNCST marks its 20th year and looks to the next decade, a number of questions loom large: How should the Government of Uganda prioritize among the innumerable critical needs expressed in the National STI Policy? In what areas should investment of limited STI resources be made to maximize social, industrial, and economic benefits? How should stakeholders outside of government, especially those in industry, be engaged in this process? Co-hosted by the World Bank Uganda Office and UNCST, this event will launch a national STI strategy-setting process. The process begins with a 2-day dialogue among key stakeholders in government, academia, and industry to tackle these and other questions.

More than 500 million people in sub-Saharan Africa – greater than 70 percent of the population – lack electricity, and about 600 million still rely on traditional biomass fuel for cooking.
A new report on this topic, Turning Science On: Improving Access to Energy in Sub-Saharan Africa, will be released at the conference by the science academies participating in ASADI. The report assesses the relationship between access to energy and human development, including the correlation between energy access and achievement of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals. Its key messages outline how policymakers can take advantage of both existing and future scientific solutions to expand energy access across the continent. Policymakers from ministries and parliaments across Africa will join renowned energy experts and officials of several African science academies at the conference.

What: Grand Challenges in Global Sustainability Research Online Consultation
Where: Online
Description:draft document ICSU and its partners have launched an online consultation to collect views and comments on the draft document "Grand Challenges in Global Sustainability Research: A Systems Approach to Research Priorities for the Decade." The online consultation is part of the Earth system visioning process and is open until February 21, 2010.
International Council for Science (ICSU) and its partners are inviting organizations and individuals for their input via an online consultation beginning 21 December 2009. Grand Challenges in Sustainability Research is a global initiative centered on five grand challenges that must be addressed over the next decade if society is to manage the global environmental change that is now underway and cope with the change that we cannot manage.
The proposed initiative is a result of the first step of the Earth system visioning process, which began with an online consultation that yielded more than 300 research priorities and contributions from more than 1000 people from 85 countries. The draft document "Grand Challenges in Global Sustainability Research: A Systems Approach to Research Priorities for the Decade" is part of an agenda-setting consultation that is intended to guide and stimulate scientific research on global change and global sustainability over the next decade. It is expected to become part of a broader process among scientists and scientific institutions to commit themselves to systematically work together – across disciplines and geographic regions – on agreed priority research questions that are critical to the sustainability of our planet.
The goal is to produce a widely shared vision of the scientific priorities for global sustainability research in the coming decade. The second step in the visioning process will begin on June 22, 2010, with an Open Forum in Paris to discuss the institutional structures that will facilitate a new strategy on sustainability research.

What: The 51st Annual Meeting of the Society for Economic Botany
Where: Xalapa, Mexico
Description:As conflicts between biodiversity conservation issues and economic development turn into a worldwide concern, answers are emerging from different sectors to create alternatives to face the environmental crisis and its consequences. Under this situation, agrobiodiversity, understood as a set of social construction of habitats and cultures together with agricultural systems containing diversity of species and landscapes, appears to become important in addressing issues such as food security and poverty reduction. However, agrobiodiversity is also meeting challenges of its own that put into consideration the obligation to generate a deep analysis of all the influencing factors. For example, the capitalist expansion influences social inequities, the reduction of natural resources, climate change, and the loss of local knowledge. Consequently, in a changing world, answers must be provided and agrobiodiversity plays an important role in presenting explanations and valuable lessons around problems associated with human well-being. Therefore the 2010 meeting, carried out in the International Year of Biodiversity, will host serious and innovative discussions concerning important agrobiodiversity-related issues. The objective is to present a set of approaches that promote the conservation of agrobiodiversity and its uses in a number of themes such as ethnobotany, community conservation, food production systems, food self-sufficiency, among others.

What: STEPS Conference 2010: Pathways to Sustainability
Where: Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University
Description:Amidst unprecedented evidence of rapid environmental change and complex ecological dynamics, addressing environmental sustainability has become a central practical, moral and political challenge of our times. With social systems changing rapidly too, linked to population growth, urbanisation, mobility and globalized economic change, core development challenges around alleviating poverty and inequity are also becoming more complex. In this context, how might pathways to sustainability – that link environmental integrity with social justice – be conceptualised and built? As the world prepares to unite for the 'Rio+20' Earth Summit in 2012, what ideas, concepts and agendas can best inform effective action? How can we enrich and (re)invigorate our intellectual and practical repertoires towards a new politics of environment, development and social justice?
