Event: Climate Change and Food Security: The Road for Africa

Description: The conference intends to bring together some of the very best climate change scientists to exchange ideas and experiences on climate change impacts and adaptation measures in relation to food security in Africa. Aspects that will be addressed may concern knowledge and research, policy formulation and implementation, and adaptation strategies that would ensure food security in a changing climate. Event: Human Soil Legacies

Description: Soils retain a historical legacy of past human activity. The chemical pollution legacies are perhaps the most widely recognized expressions of this with predominantly negative connotations. However, past industrial, domestic, and agricultural activities have resulted in a much broader range of chemical, biological, and physical soil legacies, the extent and implications (both positive and negative) of which are rarely appreciated. Event: Ecological Society of America’s (ESA) 96th Annual Meeting
Location: Austin, Texas
Description: The meeting, which has the theme "Earth Stewardship: Preserving and enhancing the earth's life-support systems," is expected to draw more than 3,500 scientists, policy makers, educators, and concerned citizens to share emerging research and explore strategies to enhance community-based approaches to global responsibility. Other highlights include MacArthur Award winner Stephen Pacala, ESA MacArthur Lecturer; Director, Princeton Environmental Institute, who will be the Keynote Speaker. A live music concert will take place on Thursday evening, August 11 to benefit local environmental groups. The scientific program features 24 symposia, 38 workshops, 22 field trips, and a host of special sessions, organized and contributed oral sessions and poster sessions. The field trips will explore everything from avian ecology of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge to a Bracken Bat cave.
